കുമാരി എന്റെ മകളായിരുന്നു. അച്ഛനും മകളുമായിട്ടാണ് എൻറെ ആദ്യത്തെ ചിത്രത്തിൽ ഞങ്ങൾ അഭിനയിച്ചത്. സത്യൻ എന്റെ മകനും. പ്രതീക്ഷകളുടെ ചുവടുമായി ചലച്ചിത്ര രംഗത്തേക്ക് ആദ്യം പ്രവേശിക്കുന്ന നടീനടന്മാർക്കു കൂടെ അഭിനയിക്കുന്നവരോട് എന്തെന്നില്ലാത്ത അടുപ്പവും മതിപ്പും ഉണ്ടാകും എന്ന് ഞാൻ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.
എന്റെ അനുഭവങ്ങൾ എന്നിലുണ്ടാക്കിത്തന്ന വിശ്വാസം അതാണ്. എട്ടു വയസ്സ് മുതൽ അഭിനയകലയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട എനിക്ക് ഒരു നടിയുടെയോ നടന്റെയോ കഴിവുകളുടെ അളവും മറ്റും മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ പ്രയാസം തോന്നിയില്ല. അങ്ങിനെ അഭിനയവേദിയിൽ കേവലം ഒരു “കന്നി”യായിരുന്ന മിസ് കുമാരിയിൽ വാസനയുടെ പ്രചുരമായ പ്രകടനങ്ങൾ ദൃശ്യമായിരുന്നു.
ഒരു തുടക്കക്കാരിക്കുണ്ടാവാവുന്ന സങ്കോചവും പ്രയാസങ്ങളും കുമാരിയിൽ കണ്ടില്ല. എത്രയും അനായാസേന തന്റെ ഭാഗം ശിക്ഷണം കൂടാതെ അഭിനയിക്കുവാൻ കുമാരിക്ക് സാധിക്കുന്നതുകണ്ട്‌ ഞാൻ ‘ആത്മസഖി‘ യുടെ കാലത്ത് അദ്‌ഭുതപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. മെരിലാൻഡിലെ അന്നത്തെ സാഹചര്യങ്ങൾ കുമാരിക്ക് ഒരു വലിയ ഭാവിയുണ്ടാക്കാൻ പര്യാപ്തമാണെന്നുകൂടി മനസ്സിലായപ്പോൾ ഒരു ഒന്നാംകിട താരം ഇതാ വളരുന്നു എന്നാണ് എനിക്ക് തോന്നിയത്.
ആ തോന്നൽ യാഥാർഥ്യമായും തീർന്നു. താരം ഉയർന്നു. പക്ഷെ…
Kumari was like a daughter to me. In fact, our first movie together was as father and daughter, and sathyan as my son.
I have a belief that when artistes start out, they always have a special respect for their first co-actors, and this was true in Kumari’s case. For me, who has been associated with movies from an age of 8 years, I always felt that kumari was a special one. She was never afraid in front of the camera neither did she have any apprehensions that are normally associated with a first timer. During the shooting of ‘Atmasakhi’, I was astounded as to how effortless she was with her performances. I always had a feeling that she was a star in the making and that feeling came true as well, but….
