അന്യ ഭാഷയിൽ നിന്ന് കടമെടുത്ത നടികളുടെയും, മലയാളികളായിട്ടും തമിഴ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ ശുദ്ധി നഷ്ടപ്പെടാതിരിക്കാൻ മലയാളം സംസാരിക്കാത്ത താരങ്ങളുടെയും ദയവിൽ മലയാള സിനിമകൾ നിർമിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന കാലത്തു് കേരളത്തിനഭിമാനിക്കാൻ സാധിക്കുന്ന അഭിനയപാടവത്തോടെ നമ്മുടെ ചലച്ചിത്ര രംഗത്തേക്ക് കടന്നു വന്ന വിനയ സമ്പന്നയായ ഒരു നടി.
പക്ഷെ സത്യസന്ധമായി പറഞ്ഞാൽ സിനിമയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട എല്ലാവരും – പ്രൊഡ്യൂസറും, ഡയറക്ടറും, സഹനടീനടൻമാരും, പ്രേക്ഷകരും, പത്രക്കാരും എല്ലാവരും – അവരോട് ക്രൂരമായി മാത്രമേ പെരുമാറിയിട്ടുള്ളൂ. കടമെടുത്തവരും അല്ലാത്തവരുമായ മറ്റെല്ലാ നടികളെക്കാളും പ്രഗത്ഭയായിരുന്നു കുമാരി എങ്കിലും. അവർക്കെന്നെങ്കിലും ആരെങ്കിലും താരാപദം നല്കിയിരുന്നോ എന്നെനിക്കു സംശയമാണ്.
കുമാരി നടിയായിരുന്നു.വലിയൊരു നടി . അവരൊരു വലിയ താരവുമായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷെ മലയാളത്തിൽ മാത്രം ഒതുങ്ങിനിന്നതുകൊണ്ടായിരിക്കാം അവരെ താരമായി അംഗീകരിക്കാൻ നാം മറന്നു പോയത്.
In an era when we were borrowing both stories and heroines from other south Indian language movies, she came in with a whiff of fresh air and talent, something that we could be proud of.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, all people associated with movies, be it producers, directors or press, treated her with utter disdain and for some reason, never treated her like a star, something that she deserved.
She was not just a star, to me, she was a Big Star. Probably, because she limited herself to Malayalam movie industry, somehow, we never recognized her.
