Avakashi (1954)
The Heir
Release date : 19 March 1954
Avakashi was the first of the two movies released by Neela (Merryland) in 1954, (the other being Balyasakhi) both starring Miss Kumari. The story was the cliched narrative of the rich-vs-poor-who-unite-in-love, that had been done to death in other languages and in Malayalam and was a box-office success. Avakashi also saw CS Radhadevi’s debut as a playback singer in Malayalam cinema.

Chandrasekharan Thampi is a businessman in Malay and sends money to his brother in law Thrivikraman Thampi, who uses this money to buy house and property. However, the untimely demise of Chandrasekharan forces his wife Kalyani & infant child to come to Thrivikraman Thampi. This however does not please Thampi and his wife Madhavi as they fear that they may lose the entire property to rightful heirs.
They plot to kill the infant. He employs his faithful servant Rudran to do it. However, on seeing the infant, Rudran has a change of heart and instead of killing him, he takes the infant away. After convincing that he has killed the infant, he collects his rewards from Thrivikraman thampi and moves to the forest along with his wife, his son Chandran & the infant, whom he names Vijayan. Thrivikraman is happy but hides the happiness and comforts Kalyani.
Many years later, Chandran & Vijayan grow up to be able fighters. Thrivikraman on the other hand, continues his oppression of farmers and labourers. He decides to marry of his daughter Kumari to Pratapan, his wife’s nephew but faces opposition from his daughter who does not like Pratapan.
Suddenly one day, Rudran dies in an accident. Before his death, he informs Vijayan about his hierarchy and takes a vow from Vijayan that he will fight for rightful property. One day, Vijayan rescues Kumari from an accident and this prompts Kumari to invite Vijayan to her house. Vijayan & Kumari fall in love. Chandran joins Vijayan at Chandra Bhavan as a servant. Meanwhile, Kalyani is waiting for her son to come back.
On knowing about the affair, Kumari is imprisoned by her parents. Vijayan knows about this and comes to rescue Kumari. However, he is taken as a prisoner by Thrivikraman who decides to eliminate him. In the fight, an unknown person comes to Vijayan’s rescue. On returning back, they are again captured by Pratapan, who puts Vijayan inside a house & decides to put the house on fire. Again the unknown person comes and rescues him.
In the meantime, Kumari is being married off to pratapan. Vijayan reaches the venue. After a fight in which Thampi & his associates are captured, Vijayan finds his mother Kalyani. Everybody is happy that the rightful heir is back. It is then known that the unknown person who helped Vijayan is Chandran. Atlast, Vijayan & Kumari get married.
